Description
Built in 1925, the Burton Cotton Gin in Burton, Texas processed cotton for the local farmers. Farmers would bring their cotton to the Gin and in 12 minutes, they would have their 1,500 lbs of cotton reduced to a 500lbs bale of cotton. The gin is powered by a 1925 Bessemer Engine that still functions today. Although they are no longer in daily operation, the Burton Cotton Gin fires up their engine every April for the Burton Cotton Festival and volunteers bale cotton for visitors. This is the oldest Bessemer Engine that still works. The Burton Cotton Gin was in operation until 1974; today, it is a National Historical Landmark.
