Description
Growing up in Sugar Land, Texas I lived in the shadow of the Sugar Mill. A 600-ton raw sugar mill sugar mill was built in 1883. In 1896, construction began on a cane sugar refinery in Sugar Land, Texas to convert the sugar mills raw sugar into 100,000 pounds of refined sugar a day. The Kempner family bought the primary sugar plantations in Sugar Land shortly after the turn of the century and formd the Imperial Sugar Company. Not long after that, they incorporated the Imperial Sugar Company. Every morning at 6am, I would wake up to the whistle at the Imperial Sugar Company signaling that it was time to come to work. When passing by, you could clearly smell the raw sugar cane being boiled down and refined that, I do not miss. The Imperial Sugar Company was the whole reason that Sugar Land was built. Not only was it the largest building in town for a very long time, but it was the main employer in Sugar Land. Over the years with development spreading, the Imperial Sugar Company or as we refer to it, The Sugar Mill has faded into the background. Now we have malls of shops and large hotels, fine dining and when someone says Sugar Mill many people think you are referring to the neighborhood; but those who grew up here were blessed to have the memories of the Imperial Sugar Mill when it was still in operation.
