Description
Originally built in 1877, St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill was built on land that was purchased with $100 in Gold by the original members. This area of Texas was settled by German immigrants who found the Washington County and surrounding areas to resemble their homeland back in Germany. The furtive soil allowed the settlers of this area to become successful farmers and still holds beauty today. As more people moved into the area, it became harder and harder to travel to Brenham, so the local people of Prairie Hill came together under the direction of Re. Friedrich Ernst to form this church. While the country was celebrating its Bicentennial, St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill was celebrating their 100 year tradition. Today, the people of Prairie Hill are still worshipping as they have for the past 136 years.
