Description
Neuschwanstein Castle sits in the rugged Bavarian hills of Germany. Built by King Ludwig II, the palace was commissioned to pay homage to Richard Wagner. The castle was the inspiration for Disneylands Sleeping Beauty Castle.
When you arrive to see the castle, you must first walk up a mountain. This is half of the fun of viewing this castle. Walking through the German forest, you begin to realize why castles were built on hilltops such as this. Attackers would have to approach the castle going uphill carrying all of their armor. By the time any enemy forces would have arrived at the castle, the soldiers would be tired. Of course, Neuschwanstein Castle was built a couple hundred years later than the style it was fashioned for, but the concept is the same. King Ludwig II was definitely crazy and his family had him deposed due to his mental state. It is obvious that Ludwig II was eccentric and had a romantic view of the Middle Ages. What is most interesting are the events events surrounding Mad Ludwig IIs death. Nobody knows for sure how he died, but his family was relieved to see him gone. His legacy lives on with the great building projects that he commissioned such as Neuschwanstein Castle otherwise known as Schloss Neuschwanstein.
