Description
Opened in 1930, the Chrysler Building brings the distinctive Art Deco architectural design to the skyline of New York City. At the time that it was being built, 40 Wall Street was being built by H. Craig Severance. Severance was boasting that his building was going to be the tallest building in the world, so the architect of the Chrysler Building, William Van Alen, constructed a spire in secret and did not hoist the spire on top of the building until the construction was complete on the 40 Wall Street building, essentially stealing their thunder. This is a great example of the type of aggressive competition that has helped guid our nation.
