Description
This is the Memorial to those that died at Texas A&M while building Bonfire. I was there and witnessed the horror unfold. Going back to this memorial still moves me to tears. Bonfire is a tradition at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX and the student body builds a very large stack of logs. The logs were lit the night before the t.u. game (our name for the University of Texas) in order to symbolize our burning desire to "beat the hell out of t.u." In 1999, tragedy struck when the bonfire collapsed during construction, killing 12 students. I knew seven of those who were killed and some of my other friends were hurt. It was a sad day in Aggieland and we will continue to remember those who died. Each gateway is dedicated to a student who was killed and has a sculpture of them along with a eulogy and their signature. If you stand in the middle of this memorial and face through one of the gates, it points to their hometown.
